Evolution

Evolution seems like a chain where things get better and better, but in reality, it's just the frequency in which the species reproduces. So by evolutionary standards, whoever has more children is more successful. But by society's standards, that is not always the case.

One example is that a person who's rich, has a PHD, and an MD, decides to have 1 child with his wife, who also has a PHD and an MD. Another person, who's irresponsible, poor, and dropped out of high school, has 10 children. By society's standards, the one with 10 children is unsuccessful. But from an evolutionary point of view, he's more successful.

Another example is that about 80% of people who live in africa are related to one guy, who lived many years ago. That guy may have pillaged many villages, and killed many people, but he is still successful from an evolutionary point of view. His actions may be despicable, but he is still successful from an evolutionary point of view.

I watched the whole video on Intelligent Design and Evolution, on Khan Academy, and I personally believe in evolution. Thanks for reading!

Freak the mighty book review.

Recently, I read Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick. The main characters were named max and freak, and they grew opposite ways. Freak's mind grew much faster than his body, where it was just the other way for max. They meet and soon become friends. Freak got into a [pun intended] freak accident and broke his legs. Max gives freak piggyback rides through most of the story.

Like I said before, max's body grew faster than his brain, so he needs freak's help a lot. There are a few things that he still doesn't get, like words that freak says. His father is in jail for murder.

Freak needs Max's help to move, because he has 2 broken legs. He has the brain of a 45 year old, but the body of a 2 year old. He also has a very active imagination. His father is never mentioned in the story.

Freak and max may be somewhat opposite, but they're really good friends. They need each other's help a lot. When Max gives Freak a piggyback ride, they call themselves freak the mighty. They make a very good team.

I would personally recommend this book to all kids 7 and up. The ending is a bit sad, but those ages can handle it. I don't want to spoil any of the book for you, so I'll finish the report here. Thanks for reading!

Art of war book review

Q. Make a list of facts you learned from the book.

A. I learned a lot from The Art of War, by Sun Tzu. Here's a list of facts I learned from the book:

- All warfare is based on deception.

- Attack the enemy where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.

- When you surround an army, leave an outlet free. Do not press a desperate foe too hard.

Q. List five new words you learned in the book. Write down their dictionary pronunciation and meaning.

A. I learned a lot of vocabulary in The Art of War. Here are 5 words, and their pronunciation and meaning:

- obtain [uhb-teyn] to succeed

- ken [ken] knowledge, understanding, or cognizance; mental perception.

- internecine [in-ter-nee-seen] struggle within a group or nation

- lacuna [luh-kyoo-nuh] a gap; a missing passage

-adduce [uh-doos] to cite as pertinent or conclusive

Q. What kind of book is this? List three evidences of this.

The art of war is considered philosophy.

-It is nonfiction.

-It can be generalized to show the way to success.

-It can be generalized to show the way to defeat.

Q. What was the author's purpose or purposes in writing this book?

A. I believe that Sun Tzu wrote The Art of War to help generals succeed in war.

Q. What lesson did you learn from the story?

A. I learned that, to succeed, you need to know yourself and your enemy. If you know yourself, but not the enemy, you will not succeed as much. If you know neither, you will not succeed at all.

Q. In a good paragraph, state the main idea of the book.

A. The main idea of this book is that you have to follow a certain set of guidelines if you want to succeed. I believe this because most armies who lose battles don't follow them. An example would be the battle at Normandy.

Q. Compare this book with the last book you read.

A. The last book I read had a story, and The Art of War doesn't. The last book had characters, this doesn't. Finally, the last book i read was fiction, and this book isn't.

Q. Pretend you are a librarian recommending this book to someone. Write a paragraph telling what you would say.

A. "This book is pretty much basic philosophy. If you're having trouble, just in general, see if you can find any information that will help. The book doesn't just apply to war."

Q. Who do you think the author intended to read this book and why?

A. I think that Sun Tzu intended army generals to read this so they would learn how to succeed in war.

Q. What did you think was the most interesting part of the book? Why?

A. I think that the annotations were the most interesting part. They explained the book in a way that I could understand.

A story about the 1st of july.

Today, I'm writing about my 4th of July weekend...well...the Friday before it at least. We saw fireworks, a concert, and a water-ski show that same day, and place! It was really fun, I have to admit.

We got there at 5:00 pm, and it was surprisingly crowded considering the fact that it was 2 hours before anything started. My parents and I got the blanket, cooler, and water set up first. After that we had the chicken sandwiches mom had packed. I then took off my sandals and threw some rocks in the water.

About a half hour later, some boats came around, over the water, and created huge wakes. I had never seen wakes, and they sounded really nice when they hit the shore. We got the popcorn out of the bag and had some, while that was happening.

Around an hour and 15 minutes later, me and dad went out and threw a football back and forth. I could never get the spiral right, and neither could dad. It was kinda funny. Both of us kept missing the ball, too. I almost hit someone, but dad caught it at the last second.

We headed back after 45 minutes and watched the water-ski show. They set up a ramp, and the water-skiers would go up and do tricks in midair. For example, one of them waved, while another was doing a front-flip. One of them might've done a full split! It was really, really exciting.

Around the middle of the show, the band came on. They played a bunch of classic rock songs, none of which I know the names of, but they sounded good. We ran out of popcorn, and got out the second container that we brought. To entertain us while we waited for the fireworks, mom downloaded the free version of a trivia app on her phone. Sadly, we ran out of questions within 10 minutes, and she then bought the full version.

At 9:15, the fireworks were supposed to start. The people who sent the fireworks up suddenly went into the forest for 15 minutes, then came back, and started the show. There were lots of fireworks, there was one that looked like a ring, one of them that exploded twice, and there was even a smiley face

We got home at 10:30, and watched TV until 11:00. I had to go to bed at that point. After all, it was a great day.

4th of july essay

I had a blast over the 4th of July weekend! I saw fireworks, a band, and a water-skiing show in Scotia on the 1st. On the actual 4th, I participated in a parade going around the block in my best friend's neighborhood. I went swimming on the 2nd and 3rd, and went underwater fully on the 3rd.

Personally, I really like this holiday. Mostly because of the fireworks, but I have other reasons to like it, too. One reason is that it's one of the only holidays where I think about the people who have fought, or are fighting, in wars. On the 4th, I usually think about the fact that if the declaration of independence had never been signed, the U.S. would still be part of England. I'm extremely happy that yesterday happened.

My favorite part of the weekend would have to be the fireworks. They may have been loud, but they were really beautiful. One of them was a smiley face! Another one made a cool little 3D looking ring. At one point, they put too many up at once, and it hurt my eyes.

In review, the 4th of July is my 3rd favorite holiday, behind memorial day and Christmas, and my favorite part of the 4th is the fireworks. I got to ride my bike with my best friend, I went underwater fully, and I saw a great fireworks show. Overall, it was a great weekend.
